Medical Marijuana Program
The California Medical Marijuana Program (MMP) allows qualified patients and their primary caregivers to apply for a Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC). This voluntary, state-issued ID card helps law enforcement and others verify legal authorization to possess, transport, or cultivate medical cannabis under California Law.
The MMP is administered by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in cooperation with each patient's county of residence. In Sierra County, Public Health facilitates the application process and card issuance.
Who Qualifies?
To qualify for an MMIC, you must:
- Be a California resident
- Have a physician's written recommendation for medical cannabis use
- Be diagnosed with a serious medical condition as defined under state law (e.g., cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, HIV//AIDS)
Caregivers may also apply for a card to assist a qualified patient.
How to Apply
- Obtain a recommendation from your physician.
- Schedule an appointment with Sierra County Public Health to submit your application.
- Bring the following to your appointment:
- Completed MMIC application
- Physician's written recommendation
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Proof of Sierra County residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
- Application fee
Fees
The application fee helps support state and county administration of the program, as required by Senate Bill 420. Fee waivers may be available for patients enrolled in Medi-Cal or CMSP (County Medical Services Program).
What the MMIC Does
- Verifies legal status as a medical marijuana patient or caregiver
- Protects against arrest for possession or transport of medical cannabis under state law
- Confirms authorization to cultivate medical cannabis within local limits
Cards are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
